Gateway Curry Pie (Becca's Bakery)

This will be the first actual Pie Review on this alleged 'Pie Critic' blog, so please prep yourself for some finger lickin' fun. It only took 5+ years to write one up, which I should start by announcing my bias, since I've been eating this pie for over 25 years and it is the reason I am called the CurryPieGuy.

Becca's beef curry pie was the gateway curry pie for me, it is what inspired this blog to evolve to where it is today (a flailing blog with about 0.25 posts & 1-2 readers annually)

Lets start with the star of the show: Becca's Bakery's Beef Curry Pie. The crust is partially-flaky on top, with a soft shortcrust pie bottom, served on an aluminum pie tin. Becca's pie pastry is modest in their recipe, without being overtly filo-y/fancy, subtle amounts of seasoning in it, and soft where it matters. They have stayed in their lane for as long as I've known it and deserve points for consistency.

Pro tip: Fold the pie-tin like a scoop/spoon to feed yourself if the pie's bottom structural integrity gives way, since the pie's pastry rim is load bearing.

The filling is thick beef mince (I prefer thicker mince chunks over the fine 'mealy' ones out there) that is cooked to soft perfection. If you're lucky, there are occasional fatty pieces of slow-cooked beef tendon. The gravy is medium-thick in consistency and has a medium curry kick to it. I think this is what makes Becca's curry pie trump many other beef curry pies: it's the Goldilocks of pies. You don't need tomato sauce to accompany this pie. It stands strong by itself.

The kicker for all this is the value of the pie. Although we're in tough times in 2025 with the CPI of the Banh Mi reaching astronomical highs, this humble pie has been relatively unscathed from all the price gouging out there. At approx. $7 AUD for the curry pie, I think it's still fair to call it 5/5 pies for value. In total, I would give the curry pie a 4/5 pies rating.

Finally, an honourable mention to a suburban bakery staple that’s not sourdough bread or vegemite scrolls is their Banh Mi. Whilst nothing mind-blowing, it’s better than anything in a 5KM radius. If you need something more than just pie, get the Banh Mi! The 'baguette' roll is okay, and the fillings are also okay and the ratios are okay.

3/5 Pies for their Banh Mi, it's no Marrickville/Bankstown/Hong Ha, but it fits the bill just right without a queue.

Overall, Becca's Bakery is your stereotypical, cookie-cutter, Australian-Vietnamese bakery. If we're only critiquing pies and Banh Mi, then it's worthy to review. If you do step foot into their store, do NOT - I repeat - do NOT order the sausage roll. It is dense enough to be a door stop, and dry enough to be used as climbing chalk if crushed up.

Beccas' is food for the locals, and it also has the charm of a dirty Asian restaurant. Personally, I think they probably should clean up their act, but don't let that stop you from enjoying their goods.

If you ever find yourself heading down the recently opened Westmead to Carlingford lightrail line, I would recommend dropping by Dundas and visiting Becca's as the first stop.

What should I order? (For 2, ~$20)

  • Beef Curry Pie
  • 2x Original Banh Mi
  • Some dinner rolls to go

What should I avoid?

  • Sausage rolls
  • Anything sweet

Becca's Bakery is found at 14 Station St, Dundas NSW 2117
